Construction

The Centre of Studies for Construction is one of the first centre of studies formed under the School of Architecture, Planning and Surveying (currently known as Faculty of Architecture, Planning and Surveying) at the same time with the establishment of MARA Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1967. The centre of studies has since produced more than 3500 graduates at the Diploma level and over 300 graduates at the Degree level. The Bachelor’s degree course was established in 1976, and was previously known as Advanced Diploma in Building.

The 3-year Diploma course is conducted on a full-time basis in branch campuses of Seri Iskandar Perak and Kota Samarahan Sarawak. The 2-year degree programme, however, is conducted on both full time and part time basis at the Shah Alam main campus. Starting January 2011, the degree programme is known as BSc (Hons) in Construction Management. The structure of the programme has been reviewed and updated to respond to the need of latest development in the field. Admission to the degree programme was amended and the length of study will depend on the candidate's qualification at entry level (STPM/Matrikulasi = 3 1/2 years full time; Diploma in Building = 2 years)

Since 1989 the number of students enrolled into the Diploma and Degree programmes have been steadily increasing and the centre of studies is looking forward to having yearly enrolment of 500 diploma students and 100 degree students. An average between 75-80 percent of the diploma holders proceed to study for their degree in Building in local institutions and abroad. The majority of these students continue their degree programme in recognised universities in the United Kingdom and Australia with exemption for direct entry in a four year degree programme.

Both the Diploma and Degree programmes are fully recognised by the Public Services Department of Malaysia. The programmes are also fully accredited and recognised by the Chartered Institute of Building, United Kingdom since 1976. The Diploma in Building achieves exemption from Level I and partly Level II of the Chartered Institute of Building examinations and the Bachelor of Construction (Honours) obtains full exemption at all levels (I, II & III) of CIOB examinations.

Quantity Surveying

The Centre of Studies for Quantity Surveying is one of the pioneering centre of studies established at faculty. The centre of studies currently conducts two programmes - Diploma in Quantity Surveying (DQS) and Bachelor of Quantity Surveying (BQS). To date, more than 5,000 diploma students and over 2,000 degree students have graduated from these programmes.

The 3-year diploma is conducted on a full-time basis. It currently has a total number of about 1,300 students in the branch campuses of Seri Iskandar, Perak and Kota Samarahan, Sarawak. The BQS programme is conducted at the Shah Alam campus on full-time and part-time modes. The duration of the BQS programme is three years.

The entry requirement for BQS programme is STPM (Malaysian Higher School Certificate) or a Matriculation Certificate. Candidates with a Diploma in Quantity Surveying from recognized institutions of higher learning or related programme may also apply and credit transfer for certain courses may be given for these students. The part-time programme caters for diploma holders only.

Since 2003, the student intakes for the bachelor programme have been steadily increasing and the department is gearing to have a yearly enrolment of 200 students.

On average, 75% to 80% of UiTM Diploma in Quantity Surveying holders proceeds for the bachelor in quantity surveying in local universities and abroad. Some pursue their first-degree in recognized universities in United Kingdom and Australia with advance entry into the second or third year of a 3-year or 4-year bachelor programme.

Both the Diploma in Quantity Surveying and Bachelor of Quantity Surveying (Hons) are recognized by the Malaysian Government. The Bachelor of Quantity Surveying (Hons) programme is accredited by the Board of Quantity Surveying Malaysia (BQSM) and Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyor (RICS).
